Share your sexual expectations with one another and work on finding a common ground.   After going so long without discussing this important topic, you’ll more than likely be more  alike in your responses than you think. 2. Understand that even with expectations, our individual sexuality is not etched in stone:   our individual sexual needs can and do change as we mature and we need to deal with  our sexual/emotional baggage as we become exposed to new knowledge about sex.  This means that each spouse must remain flexible and demonstrate a willingness to compromise  to keep the other sexually fulfilled. 3. Do something different outside your normal sexual repertoire. This may involve  having sex in the shower, in a safe outdoor environment like the backyard or garage  (of course while observing decency laws), doing it in a different room of the house,  switching up sexual positions, sharing a sexual fantasy or spending a night or weekend  in a hotel room. This list is by no means exhaustive. Each one of you should is free  to allow their imagination to take flight. 6. How does a juicy sex life do a body good? Let's count the ways.

1. Less Stress, Better Blood Pressure

Having sex could lower your stress and your blood pressure.

That finding comes from a Scottish study of 24 women and 22 men who kept records of their sexual activity. The researchers put them in stressful situations -- such as speaking in public and doing math out loud -- and checked their blood pressure.

People who'd had sex responded better to stress than those who engaged in other sexual behaviors or abstained.

Another study found that diastolic blood pressure (the bottom number of your blood pressure) tends to be lower in people who live together and have sex often.

2. Sex Boosts Immunity

Having sex once or twice a week has been linked with higher levels of an antibody called immunoglobulin A, or IgA, which can protect you from getting colds and other infections. 

A Wilkes University study had 112 college students keep records of how often they had sex and also provide saliva samples for the study. Those who had sex once or twice a week had higher levels of IgA than other students.

3. Sex Burns Calories

Thirty minutes of sex burns 85 calories or more. It may not sound like much, but it adds up: Forty-two half-hour sessions will burn 3,570 calories, more than enough to lose a pound. Doubling up, you could drop that pound in 21 hour-long sessions.

"Sex is a great mode of exercise," Los Angeles sexologist Patti Britton says. It takes both physical and psychological work, though, to do it well, she says.

4. Sex Improves Heart Health

A 20-year-long British study shows that men who had sex two or more times a week were half as likely to have a fatal heart attack than men who had sex less than once a month.

And although some older folks may worry that sex could cause a stroke, the study found no link between how often men had sex and how likely they were to have a stroke. 

5. Better Self-Esteem

University of Texas researchers found that boosting self-esteem was one of 237 reasons people have sex.

That finding makes sense to sex, marriage, and family therapist Gina Ogden. She also says that those who already have self-esteem say they sometimes have sex to feel even better.

"One of the reasons people say they have sex is to feel good about themselves," she says. "Great sex begins with self-esteem. If the sex is loving, connected, and what you want, it raises it."

Of course, you don't have to have lots of sex to feel good about yourself. Your self-esteem is all about you -- not someone else. But if you're already feeling good about yourself, a great sex life may help you feel even better.

6. Deeper Intimacy

Having sex and orgasms boosts levels of the hormone oxytocin, the so-called love hormone, which helps people bond and build trust.

In a study of 59 women, researchers checked their oxytocin levels before and after the women hugged their partners. The women had higher oxytocin levels if they had more of that physical contact with their partner.

Higher oxytocin levels have also been linked with a feeling of generosity. So snuggle up -- it might help you feel more generous toward your partner.

7. Sex May Turn Down Pain

Oxytocin also boosts your body's painkillers, called endorphins. Headache, arthritis pain, or PMS symptoms may improve after sex.

In one study, 48 people inhaled oxytocin vapor and then had their fingers pricked. The oxytocin increased their pain threshold by more than half, meaning they sensed pain at a higher threshold or were more tolerant of pain.

8. More Ejaculations May Make Prostate Cancer Less Likely

Research shows that frequent ejaculations, especially in 20-something men, may lower the risk of getting prostate cancer later in life.

A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that men who had 21 or more ejaculations a month were less likely to get prostate cancer than those who had four to seven ejaculations per month.

The study doesn't prove that ejaculations were the only factor that mattered. Many things affect a person's odds of developing cancer. But when the researchers took that into consideration, the findings still held.

9. Stronger Pelvic Floor Muscles

For women, doing pelvic floor muscle exercises called Kegels may mean more pleasure -- and, as a perk, less chance of incontinence later in life.

To do a basic Kegel exercise, tighten the muscles of your pelvic floor as if you're trying to stop the flow of urine. Count to three, then release.

10. Better Sleep

The oxytocin released during orgasm also helps sleep, research shows.

Getting enough sleep has also been linked with a host of other health benefits, such as a healthy weight and better blood pressure. That's something to think about, especially if you've been wondering why your guy can be active one minute and snoring the next.

What is love? How to keep your romance alive

What is love? A new study claims to have found the key to true love

What is love? Is it giving someone your last Rolo? Or picking up your partner’s dirty socks off the bedroom floor?
Love fascinates us. ‘What is love?’ was the most searched phrase on Google last year – with a whopping 458 million results.
But recent research may be able to give a better answer to that question and identify what keeps couples together.
Results from a study by the Open University were released today and it looks as though simple acts of kindness are top of the list.
So could love in the 21st century really be as simple as taking the rubbish bins out?
‘The two-year study looked to understand how long-lasting relationships are lived by couples,’ says Dr Martina Klett-Davies, research associate on the project.
‘The media portrays love and relationships in a highly romantic way. What it shows tends to be idealistic. There is not much about practicalities and day-to-day issues.’
The study found making your partner feel appreciated kept a relationship strong. ‘Partners tended to really appreciate the time and effort required to complete the everyday mundane tasks that underpin relationships,’ says Klett-Davies.
Making a cup of tea and giving a compliment were highly valued. Flowers and chocolates were seen as less important.
‘Sharing interests and values, and being “best friends” also ranked highly among both men and women,’ says Klett-Davies.
‘This signifies an emotional closeness. Couple relationships 100 years ago were an economic unity. Now the basis is an emotional attachment.’
Psychotherapist David Waters agrees that love is a connection to another person. ‘It’s a deep form of companionship that builds over time,’ he says. ‘It’s a sense of having someone at your side as you journey through life.’
Waters says he believes in attraction at first sight but says love is something that takes time and is constantly evolving. ‘Although we have become much more of a consumer culture, people should not run at the first signs of conflict in their relationship,’ he says.
In the study, relationship satisfaction was positively linked with the number of stressors participants have experienced, such as bereavement, birth of a child, taking up a new educational course, redundancy and unemployment.
‘As a trend, divorce rates are going up but in the past year they have gone down slightly,’ says Klett-Davies. ‘This supports the thesis that couples might be pulling together in hard times.’
The study also suggests that childless couples are much happier with their relationships. ‘Couples tend to do less relationship maintenance if they have kids,’ says Klett-Davies. ‘They are less likely to spend time together as a couple, share fewer interests and are less likely to say “I love you”.
The physical attention reserved for a partner may shift to the new baby. The couple relationship clearly goes through a transition and what we think of as romance might be put on the back burner.’
Philosopher Mark Vernon is the author of Love: All That Matters (£7.99, Hodder). He says that although romance is routinely celebrated as the ultimate experience, it is only one stage of a lasting relationship.
‘Romance is a very powerful marketing tool when it comes to love,’ he says. ‘It’s a wonderful thing to fall in love but romance is just a stage. It should not be seen as the pinnacle of a relationship.’
Vernon says there are three stages to a relationship. ‘The first stage is self-love,’ he says. ‘Learning to be comfortable in your own skin and love yourself.
Only then can you move to stage two: falling in love and romance.
Vernon says this is moving your attention away from yourself to another person. ‘There is a saying that lovers need to stop gazing into each other’s eyes and start looking into life,’ he says. ‘And this is stage three. I think this is when a relationship becomes a friendship. These friends then have a passion for life and not just each other and can move through life together. That is, in my opinion, the pinnacle of love.’
Vernon adds that love today is freer than it was 100 years ago. ‘There is much more choice: gay or straight; multiracial; young and old,’ he says. ‘And that is wonderful. But love is really more about commitment. Love is definitely something that is built over time, rather than spontaneously found.’
Klett-Davies agrees: ‘From our research, we found that love is not necessarily romance. Love can be expressed through everyday practices. In the 21st century, it seems that actions speak louder than words. This means love can be expressed though putting the bins out.’

Think You’re Being Nice by Slowly Fading Away? You’re Not.

First, let me just say that daters who gradually extricate themselves from a romantic interest’s life by doing what’s known as the “Slow Fade” get a bad rap. They’re often called selfish insensitive jerks, but more often than not, they hate disappointing people and don’t realize they’re being cowardly and confusing. Rather, they think they’re being nice.
To understand this classic breakup maneuver, it’s important to distinguish what the Slow Fade is not. It’s not “poofing” after you’ve said you had a really good time and wanted to see a date again. It doesn’t involve blowing off emails or texts. Slow Faders always respond, which is exactly what makes them so exasperating. The Fade usually takes place after a couple of good dates, just as you think there’s some romantic momentum. Slow Faders will send occasional texts wishing you “Happy Tuesday!” or “Good luck on your 5K.” Sometimes they will make vague references to “getting together soon” or seeing you when “their crazy work schedule calms down.” But – and here’s the big tipoff – they never actually ask you out. Or if you’re the one doing the asking, you receive a murky “Sounds fun, but it’s a busy week. Perhaps next week?”
So why are Slow Faders so annoyingly evasive? Here’s the likely scenario: The Slow Fader likes you and all, but he or she doesn’t want to continue dating you. However, that person spent just enough time with you – maybe on your couch or at your dinner table – that the Slow Fader would feel super guilty ignoring you. So instead of telling you they don’t want to see you again, they maintain infrequent and distant communication for a few weeks before finally dropping off the face of the earth. Slow Faders think this is a kinder, gentler way of backing out of your life. They sincerely believe that by executing a soft landing, they won’t hurt your heart. Maybe you’ll even forget about them.
Ah, the stuff of dating dreams! Here’s how their passive little plan usually goes down. (Okay, I I’ve been faded on a few times.) First, you question what the Slow Fader meant by “See you soon.” Did it mean this weekend? Maybe you ask a couple friends to decipher the message. Then you wonder if the Slow Fader received your text response “Sounds great! Look forward.” You remember the time in the summer of 2012 when the networks jammed, and you received 30 texts all at the same time two days after people had sent them. Then you think about whether you’ve overbooked your weekend, in case they did mean this weekend. Another few days go by, and you start to replay the last date in your head and ask yourself if they took offense to your snarky joke about Republican lawyers and if they really did like your ginger apricot vinaigrette. And you start to hate yourself because you can’t stop checking your phone (even in the middle of a movie). The worst part is that you’re not even sure how much you even like the person. But now the Slow Fade is slowly driving you crazy, and you find yourself screaming at your phone on your boring Friday night, “If you’re not into me, just tell me!” You don’t think that the Slow Fader was trying to be nice.
So Slow Fader, I am asking you to do the right thing and just tell your dates if you’re not interested. You will save everyone a lot of slow-baked angst and free them to spend their energy on someone else. You have your choice of time-honored curb-kickers: “There’s not enough chemistry” or “You’re not ready to pursue a relationship” or “You met someone else.” You can sweeten up the message with a few compliments, but make it clear there is no romantic future. Yes, rejecting someone is never easy, but you can handle it. And so can they! The spurned person probably won’t write nasty messages in lipstick on your windshield or strike back with a wounded “No worries. I didn’t like you that much anyway.” And in my experience as a dumpee, the sting lasts for an afternoon (okay, maybe a weekend), but we all eventually move on.
Do not use a Slow Fade campaign to “keep someone on the line.” You might think it’s a good strategy to keep your options open, in case you’re interested in resuming the romance later. But that’s not likely to happen if your Slow Fade recipient was left flopping around in your dank pool of wishy-washiness. Make a clean break, and you’ll have a better chance of getting a warm reception later on. (You can always blame the earlier flame-out on bad timing.) Your date will appreciate that you were decent and endured a little discomfort to truly respect their feelings.
